Electric Vehicle Chargers
At its most basic, an electric vehicle charger is a piece of equipment that pulls an electrical current from an electricity supply source, delivering it to an electric vehicle that is plugged into the equipment, and can be used to recharge the vehicle.
With U.S. auto makers increasing production of electric vehicles (EVs) each year, new EV models being introduced, production expanding to other vehicle types (such as trucks) and industry analysts predicting exponential growth in the market, adding electric vehicle charging stations to a corporate green energy plan, seems like a no-brainer. Electric vehicle charging stations will be in high demand at places where a high number of vehicles can be found, such as office complexes, malls and other commercial centers, multi-dwelling units (MDUs), public transportation stations, public parking structures, and at schools, etc.
Developing an EV roll-out strategy, to incorporate electric vehicle charges will no longer be a perk some green companies can offer as a differentiator. Eventually, electric vehicle charging stations will become a necessity – an amenity employees at large corporations and guests alike will expect. Adding EV charging stations to your business plan not only delivers a beneficial service for drivers, but it also offers businesses a unique opportunity to potentially generate an additional steam of revenue.

Solar Photovoltaic Renewable Energy Technology
Using solar photovoltaic (PV) energy to power EV chargers can significantly offset many of the costs incurred, such as electricity usage fees.
Solar PV energy uses solar cells, made of semi-conducting materials. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material. It uses a process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) called the photoelectric (PV) effect to convert sunlight directly into electricity. Multiple solar cells can be combined to make up a solar panel. And multiple solar panels can be wired together to form a solar array. Actual electricity output may vary based on factors such as weather, shading, orientation of panels, and/or hours of sunlight available.

Power Distribution and Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Solutions
Combining solar photovoltaic energy technology with power distribution and storage systems allows companies to optimize renewable energy usage.
AC-Coupled vs. DC-Coupled Systems
The type of coupling (AC or DC) refers to the way energy is transferred between two mediums by means of physical contact. More specifically, how solar panels are coupled (or linked) to an energy storage battery system. The type of electrical connection transferring the energy between the two can either be Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC). While newer solar panels produce DC and most batteries store DC, most electrical appliances require AC, thus most homes and businesses have AC circuits.
When installing a new system, DC-coupled systems are generally the better choice. This allows DC power to flow directly from the solar panels into the battery system for storage. It offers better efficiency since it requires fewer components and fewer energy conversions overall. Other benefits of DC-coupled systems (as compared to AC-coupled systems) include:
- Lower installation and integration costs
- Lower regulatory costs
- Less power disruptions
- Potential to decrease utility usage fees by utilizing stored power during peak hours
- Potential to develop a new revenue stream through resale.
- Possibility of qualifying for green energy initiative funding and/or tax credits
Lithium-Ion Battery Storage
There are many advantages to using a lithium-ion battery storage solution (as compared to a traditional 24-volt solution), including:
- Being able to store twice the available power and five times more energy in the same amount of space at a comparable weight
- A longer battery life expectancy (up to five times longer)
- Faster charging and longer run times
- Being engineered to meet the most stringent safety standards which includes steel housing and an air cooled design
- Offering seamless integration options and a simple, scalable design to be able to quickly and easily increase power as needed over time
