Engineering PLUS is an engineering firm that specializes primarily in technology solutions. Just as we strive to bring the latest and greatest technology solutions to our clients, we also continuously look for better ways to use technology advancements to better serve our clients.

Upgrading to Revit Software

In an effort to upgrade designs, and better manage project plans and simulations, our team traded in our AutoCAD for Revit, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software program widely used by architects, engineers, contractors, and builders. It has many capabilities such as allowing users to design, visualize, and simulate building projects. While Revit has many built-in amenities supporting architecture and MEP, technology support is an area still growing and improving area, which makes sense since Audio-Visual has only been recognized as a category as recent as 2022.

The initial transition from AutoCAD to Revit found our team spending an average of 20% more time on production work than with our original AutoCAD workflows. To counter this increase in labor expenses we formed an internal Revit Efficiency Team of Custom Developers, whose goals were to reduce production time associated with modeling and drawing creation. The team brought together our engineers, our most active Revit producers, and our Revit experts to find solutions to our biggest challenges.

Family Sector Tool

Challenge: Needed to reduce the amount of time taken to sift through the project browser looking for the right family to use.

Solution: We developed our own design tool that lets users select the family they want to use by both graphics and name in an organization that best suits our uses. This also helps new employees better familiarize themselves with our families since they are only first exposed graphically.

Specification Imports

Challenge: Our specifications use numbering that is not natively supported in Revit.

Solution: This led us to develop our own import tool from Word into Revit, that would allow a user to import a spec from word and draw the boundaries of this text, and automatically create multiple columns of listed information.

Synchronized Drawing List Schedules

Challenge: Revit does not natively support automated drawing lists that also identify issuances per sheet.

Solution: We developed our own automation program that would pull revision information from the sheets to automatically compile a drawing schedule that lists all sheets in a matrix that identifies sheets per revision. This list can also easily be exported to Excel to share with the wider project design team. Now we no longer run risks of discrepancies from entering the same data in 2 different locations.

Advanced Callout Identifiers

Challenge: Some callouts we use in our drawings display more information than Revit’s built-in callout solutions support.

Solution: To counter this, we developed a tool that would read callout data entered into a model and automatically fill-in custom fields for advanced callouts.
